🆒Good reporting is good
The good 'ol YouTube rabbit hole.
Happy Tuesday! So this past week I really wanted to take a deep, introspective look at myself and try to figure out what I want to do with my life. So naturally I spent hours watching YouTube instead. Very productive. Lately, I’ve been finding myself drawn more to more high quality production and reporting explainers than vlogs and tutorials. Here are three things that I think are worth watching.
In this issue
🔊 A beautiful video from a legend in the game explaining purpose in reporting (and also some Dolly Parton).
🕺 Another video about why Justin Timberlake wasn’t cancelled.
🔴 This crazy explainer about Perserverance and Mars.
Jad is the best. It is known.
If you don’t know, Jad Abumrad is the creator/host of Radiolab which is one of the best podcasts ever made. But he isn’t just a talking voice. He’s also a great reporter that goes to extreme lengths to tell a story including composing original music and sound effects for the episodes.
I’ve listened to Radiolab for years but it never really hit me just how much work went into the sound design of the podcast until I started doing it myself. After that, I started listening to episodes with a new appreciation. This video really captures that.
Justin Timberlake is uhh..not looking so good
Don’t get me wrong, I love Justin Timberlake’s music. Who doesn’t? That man and Timbaland beats go together like…idk pick your pairing. But I almost completely forgot when he took the stage with Janet Jackson in the Superbowl halftime show a few years ago and started a controvery. Like that was the only thing people could talk about for months and I completely forgot it happened.
Then I saw this Johnny Harris video pop up and it all came back to me. Except that it didn’t at all happen like I remember it happening. He brings up some amazing points about how this story was covered that really made me appreciate hardcore data even more.
Is there life on Mars?
Who knows, but Perserverance is there to hopefully find out. You can’t have missed the news but in case you did, NASA landed a rover on Mars called Perserverance. And while it was super cool to watch the livestream, I wasn’t entirely sure why it was there in the first place.
This video is barely three minutes long and pretty much explains everything you need to know. Thank God for good reporters, high quality cameras, and tax-payer dollars forcing us all to look up from time to time. A healthy perspective is worth it in my opinion.
